The consortium

Parmigiano Reggiano Consortium was created to protect the uniqueness and enhance real Parmigiano Reggiano PDO value

The first proposal to create this supervisory body dates back the beginning of last century. In 1901 Reggio Emilia Chamber of Commerce proposed to create a union between cheese producers and traders to certify the product origins for export reasons.

The creation of a voluntary Consortium for the product protection dates to 1928 and all producers belong to this. A few years later, in 1934, the dairies representatives united in the Consortium decided to adopt an origin mark C.G.T. Parmigiano Reggiano – to graphically protect its origin. In 1937 the current origin territories borders were defined, and a year later Parmigiano Reggiano name was finally and formally given to this cheese.

The current origin trademark with dots was created in 1964.
European Union PDO creation is much more recent and it was done in 1992; this lead to Parmigiano Reggiano PDO recognition in 1996.
